Since the Road Transport Act (the so-called Uber Lex) came into force, every ride-hailing driver - including Uber drivers - must hold a taxi licence. The process takes 10-14 days if everything lines up. Below is what to do and how much it costs.
What exactly is a taxi licence
A licence to perform national road passenger transport (by taxi) is a permit issued by the mayor (in cities over 100,000 inhabitants) or the county head. It is issued for 2, 5 or 10 years, and the fee depends on the period (200-700 PLN). Without it you cannot sign a partner contract or accept trips through Uber.
Documents for the licence application
- application form (office template)
- declaration of no criminal record for intentional offences
- criminal record certificate (KRK)
- copy of category B driving licence with at least 2 years of experience
- medical certificate of no contraindications to the driver profession
- psychological opinion (psychotechnical tests)
- proof of stamp duty payment
Medical certificate and psychotechnical tests must be issued by a doctor and psychologist authorised for professional driver examinations - not by a family physician. We provide a list of authorised centres in your city.
When to submit
You submit the application at the city office - in Warsaw that is the Office of Administration and Civic Affairs, in Kraków the Vehicle and Driver Registration Department. Most cities also allow submission via ePUAP, which shortens the process by a few days. The office has 30 days to issue a decision, but in practice 7-14 days is the norm with a correct set of documents.
What happens after the licence is issued
Once issued, you get a licence number (like "TX/123/2026") and the validity period. The licence applies to you as a driver - but the vehicle needs a separate extract from this licence, issued by the fleet partner (in your case, us - we do it automatically). The vehicle extract is a formal document you carry in the car alongside the registration. More on extracts and stamps: Taxi stamp and vehicle extract.
Costs - total
2-year licence - 200 PLN. 5-year - 400 PLN. 10-year - 700 PLN. Medical certificate - 150-250 PLN. Psychotechnical tests - 150-250 PLN. KRK certificate - 30 PLN (online). Total: 530-1,200 PLN depending on the option. A once-in-years cost - the 5 or 10-year variant is usually better.
Waiting time - 10 to 21 days
In big cities (Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław) we close the case in 10-14 days. In medium cities (Radom, Kielce, Olsztyn) it is 14-21 days because office cycles are slower. The longest wait is for the medical certificate - if you already have one from a work health check, you save 3-5 days.
How Departner helps
We prepare your document set, book appointments with an authorised doctor and psychologist, help fill in the form and submit it at the office. You only attend where your presence is required (medical check, licence pickup). All our help is free - we receive a commission from Uber, not from the driver.
Getting started?
If you want to start - leave your number on the form. A consultant calls back, we audit your documents and begin the procedure the same week.
